Project Management for Parents – Improve Marriage Communication

Hillary Kinney, author of Project Management for Parents, shares how project management principles can improve communication in marriage.

She draws from her 17 years of experience as a project manager with a Fortune 500 company to offer practical tips for dividing household chores, managing tasks, and taking ownership of responsibilities.

The conversation is filled with laughter and nuggets of wisdom that can be applied not only to marriage but also to leading a team at work.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • It’s important to have conversations with your spouse about who is doing different household tasks
  • Changes in schedules and responsibilities should be discussed and reworked
  • Dividing up tasks based on what makes sense for the family can bring relief and reduce overwhelm
  • Small changes, like taking on one task or offering to do grocery shopping, can make a big difference in relationships

During the pandemic, Hillary and her husband used project management meetings every morning to help manage their family’s busy schedule. Here are three examples of how these meetings helped them:

1. They held daily check-in meetings at breakfast to coordinate their son’s school schedule and their own work schedules. This helped them keep communication lines open and support their son’s success at school while also being successful at work.

2. They established a communication board to keep track of tasks and responsibilities for each family member. This helped them get everyone on the same page and build life skills in their child.

3. They included their son in the meetings and gave them areas of responsibility. This helped their child learn about teamwork and responsibility while also lightening the load for the parents.

If you want to improve marriage communication for you and your life partner in today’s hectic world, then this is the episode for you!
