What are Healthy Fats

There are three main buckets of fats when it comes to defining nutrition. They are trans fats, saturated fats, and unsaturated fats (Types of Fats, Harvard).

Good Fats and Bad Fats

Trans fats, also known as partially hydrogenated oils, are the most unhealthy of the three categories. Heavy consumption of these can lead to insulin resistance, raise low-density lipoproteins (LDL, the bad cholesterol), inflammation, and increase coronary heart disease. This is commonly found in the types of oils used by the fast-food industry because of their resistance to being heated repeatedly.

Saturated fats can be found in meats, dairy, and even cookies. While previous studies suggested that these were also unhealthy fats, there is a slightly less strict tune with these fats. It’s recommended that they make up less than 7% of our caloric intake though.

The healthy fats we’re focusing on in this podcast interview are the unsaturated fats, and specifically two fatty acids, Omega-3 and Omega-6. While these are good fats for weight loss, these Omega fatty acids are essential for cell regeneration. Examples of fats in this category include a few sources like salmon, avocado, flax seeds, walnuts, and a few oils like sunflower and canola oil. These are the fats Americans are not getting enough in their diets.
