What is a 5K Mud Run?

A 5K mud run is a five-kilometer race or event that has obstacles throughout the course. A good one will have a lot of mud obstacles to get you bogged down and feeling like you just ran through a combat zone but without all the dying.

Why? Because just running three miles for 30 to 45 minutes can be boring. In an obstacle course like these, you break that running up with a different kind of physical challenge. We’ve found these to be popular among cross-fit athletes.

What to Expect at Thunderdash

The Thunderdash Course

The main course is the 5K Obstacle Course Race. Located on a beautiful piece of land outside of Comfort this mud run in texas boasts natural mud pits, 30-foot deep rock quarries to climb in and out of and much, much more. The obstacles are man-made, nature-made, and a combination of both. Many of the obstacles will encourage team efforts for easier completion.

If you’re wondering what a 5K translates to in miles, it is a little over 3.1 miles. You can do it!

If you want to run and not do all the muddy obstacles, there is a 5K Fitness Challenge available. The Fitness Challenge is a 5K course on flat well-worn trails with a fitness challenge every ½ mile.

There is also a 10K (6.2 miles) course that combines both the Obstacle Course Race and the Fitness Challenge courses together. Go for that one if you don’t think you’ll get your money’s worth out of a 5K race. We’re doing the original 5K Obstacle Course Race ourselves.

The Goodies

In the years we have gone, we have received t-shirts, stickers, a medal (of course), free beer, and a bandana. Jerry loves those bandanas for his hiking trips.

The Fun

The event has sponsors and vendors with food trucks, beer tables, and more. Music is blaring to get you hyped up. Veterans are recognized. People race in costumes, or their favorite cross-fit outfits. Photographers line the route to take photos and video of you as you pass by. You may see yourself in the uploaded galleries on their website and Facebook.

If you ever heard a rumor of a pregnant woman beating us in this race, it really happened. Stephanie Brevig is awesome!

Final Tip

Wear shoes you don’t mind ruining. The race is fun, but your shoes will stiffen up in a way you can never return from.

Meetups!

Brandon and Jerry are running the 9 am wave of the race, and would love to meet with you either before or after that leg. Join us for a beer or two after the 9 am wave. It’ll take us about 45 minutes to get through because Jerry is still a slow runner.

Let us know you want to hang out, so we will be looking for you. [email protected].

Dinner the night before? We don’t know yet when we are arriving in town the night before the race, but we are looking at a time to have a San Antonio/Comfort, Texas dinner meetup. We’ll post more information soon.
